HARD OF HEARING

New extension opened A $25,000, two-storey extension to the Hard of Hearing League premises in Victoria Street was officially opened last evening by Mr Cranleigh Barton, a vice-president and a foundation member of the league. The new building consists of a lip-reading classroom and a storeroom downstairs, and recreational areas upstairs. The kitchen has also been renovated. The president of the league (Mr T. P. Cannon) said that $4OOO of the money had come from a Golden Kiwi lottery grant, and the rest from gifts, legacies, interest-free and low-interest loans, with only a little raised by mortgage. The Minister of Tourism (Mr Walker) and Mr T. M. McGuigan, the member of Parliament for Lyttelton, representing Mr B. G. Barclay, the member for Christchurch Central, expressed their congratulations. Mr Barton outlined the history of the league, mentioning the names of many persons associated with it in the past and present. The facilities serve a membership of about 400. Two lipreading classes can now be heard at one time. Two lipreading tutors teach about 125 pupils. Items were sung by Mrs Grace Blair and Messrs R. Gray and N. Yeates, accompanied by Mrs W. E. Olds.
