Amalgamation move support

“The commission and the other counties know our position —we go where someone else goes,” said the chairman (Mr G. P. A. de Latour), when the Akaroa County Council yesterday discussed the proposed merger of Paparua, Heathcote, Akaroa, and Mount Herbert counties.

The council received a letter from the Local Government Commission saying that it could make no decision on the proposal until it had settled the North Canterbury scheme as a whole. It was agreed to support Heathcote in its decision to send a deputation to Wellington to seek Parliamentary help, but not to be represented. “It won’t serve any useful purpose for us to spend public money running up and down to Wellington,” said Mr de Latour. “We are, however, vitally concerned, because we have always believed that we should amalgamate to form a bigger unit.”
