FERRY HELD UP
Dissatisfaction among crew (N.Z. Press Association) DUNEDIN, Sept. 20. The roll-on roll-off ferry, Hawea, at present berthed at Dunedin, was held up overnight because of dissatisfaction among crew members. The dispute arose over requests by the crew which the Union Steam Ship Company, Ltd, was not prepared to meet in the meantime, said the Dunedin company manager (Mr S. H. Robinson( this evening. He was “very hopeful” that the ferry would sail at 4.30 p.m. tomorrow. Mr Robinson would not comment on what the crew wanted but he said the requests would not end in Dunedin. He expected the crew to make further submissions to the company’s head officer in Wellington.
“I cannot comment at this stage, because any comment I make could prejudice negotiations at present in progress,” said an officer on board the Hawea.
However, two members of the crew said that two of the three requests made were met this evening, and they expected to start work tomorrow morning.
