BACK TO START

(N.Z. Press Association)

AUCKLAND, Sept. 20. Because bad weather prevented the liner Mariposa from calling at Rarotonga on Saturday, several of her passengers had their voyage extended by hundreds of miles.

In August, Mr and Mrs F. P. Makea, who had lived for a time in Hastings, left Auckland to return home to the Cook Islands.

A fortnight ago they decided to take a 618-mile trip from Rarotonga to Tahiti.

For the return voyage they boarded the Mariposa but when the liner was ununable to call at Rarotonga they were carried a further 1631 miles to the next port, Auckland.

Today they were back where they had started in August. They flew to Rarotonga tonight. What was to have been a 618-mile, one-day trip was extended to 3880 miles spread over six days.
