RUSSIAN HOPES

Wrestlers’ big day After four days of sweating out on the mat, the Olympic wrestlers finally arrive at the day of decision, with all 10 gold medals reaching their destination today. The Russian super heavyweight, Alexander Medved, known as the Muhammad Ali of wrestling because of his speed and skill, seems certain to win his third successive gold, particularly as he has already beaten his most dangerous rival, the 30-stone American, Chris Taylor. Experts predict the Russians will win five wrestling golds, with two going to the United States and the remainder distributed between Bulgaria, Iran, and Japan. Four gold medals will be at stake in the individual disciplines of the women’s gymnastics programme, and Russia’s world champion, Lyudmila Turishcheva, should add to the gold she won in the all-round event.

More Russian gold medals are probable in the modern pentathlon event, which also ends today with the crosscountry running. Boris Onischenko is the individual leader and the Russian team is well in front.
