Bringing up children
Sir, —I have been a mother for six months and agree with Professor P. J. Lawrence that there is a need for “some programme of universal diffusion of elementary knowledge of child-
rearing.” Although I have found an abundance of material catering for the physical needs of children, there is little available on their psychological and social needs. I use as a guide-line a textbook I studied at teachers’ training college, but find that most young mothers have no guide-lines to childrearing. I see appalling (but generally well-intentioned) methods used to “rear” children, but feel ill-equipped and reluctant to suggest better methods. Perhaps Professor Lawrence or someone with his experience and knowledge will soon develop the type of child-rearing programme he feels is needed. I wish I had the ability to do so.-—Yours, etc., MOTHER. August 22, 1972.
