Prison discipline
Sir, —What is hoped to be achieved by the “disciplinary” action against Mervyn Anthony Rich at Mount Eden prison? Do the prison authorities think that a No. 1 restricted diet for 14 days will help curb his appetite for freedom and resentment against society? When released after serving his sentence will he be a useful citizen? What a pity the community is never likely to benefit from the resourcefulness of this young man. There must be many like him, costing the country quite a packet to turn into thoroughly confirmed criminals.—Yours, MAUREEN WILLIAMS. August 17. 1972. [Mr E. A. Missen, Secretary for Justice, replies: “While society demands that some offenders be imprisoned there must obviously be sanctions against those who attempt to escape. Your correspondent should reflect on what the situation might be if there were not.”]
