Maori company to tour U.S.
An early booking- for two weeks on Broadway has assured the success of the New Zealand Maori Company, which will leave for a 20-week tour of the United States on October 6.
It will be the first time a New Zealand Maori Group’s name is up in lights in Times Square. The group of 75, drawn competitively from all parts of New Zealand, will assemble at Turangawaewae Marae, Ngaruawahia, next week-end for rehearsals with the American producer, Irving Sudrow, the director, Jack Regas, the cultural director, Albert Whaanga, and the executive producer, Ellie Hirai. The four worked together when Te Arohanui Maori Company visited the Western United States in 1963. Present plans are for the production to open in San Francisco on October 8 with a three-night sand. The company will play in Southern California next, and then fly to New York.
Theatre audiences have been guaranteed, and the company will play at the Palace Theatre on Broadway from October 16 to October 28. One-week stands will be played at Baltimore,
■ Washington, Detroit, St • Louis, and Cleveland. South-Eastern States will ’ be toured from December 11 I to December 30, the NorthWest in January, and the Mid-West and West in February.
