WEIGHTS FOR CUPS

The New Zealand stayer, Baghdad Note, which left New Zealand for Sydney on Friday, has received 9st 21b for this year’s Melbourne Cup and 9st for the one mile and a half Caulfield Cup. The Victorian Racing Club handicapper, Mr K. Ryan, announced the weights for both cups yesterday. The Melbourne Cup will be run at Flemington on Tuesday, November 7. while the Caulfield Cup will be run at Caulfield on Saturday, October 21. The top New Zealand sprinter, Triton headed the New Zealand contingent for the Caulfield Cup with 9st 21b. The champion Victorian stayer, Gay Icarus, last year’s Caulfield Cup winner, heads the weights for both the Melbourne Cup and Caulfield Cup with 9st 81b and 9st 111 b respectively. The billiant New Zealand three-year-old Llananthony has been given third top-weight of the New Zealand contingent for the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups, at Bst 111 b. Both cups will be run under the metric system of weights and distances. The system w’ill commence with the first meeting of the Australian 1972-73 season on August 2.
