BUTTER SALE
1532 tons to Japan flf l. Preu Auociation) WELLINGTON, July 24. The Dairy Board announced the sale today of 1532 metric tons of butter to Japan for delivery in August and September.
This is the third sale to Japan in the last four months and it brings the quantity sold to that country iq the period to 3000 tons, valued at more than s3m.
On this occasion, Japan invited world-wide tenders for 3000 tons.
Australian and European exporters competed with New Zealand, the E.E.C. making an “extremely determined” effort to obtain the business with a heavily subsidised price. The Japanese buyers placed orders for 1532 tons with New Zealand and 1468 tons with Australia.
Imports of butter into Japan are permitted only through the quasi-Govem-ment agency, the Livestock Industry Promotion Corporation. Usually, imports are arranged when a shortage of domestic butter causes prices to rise, as in recent months.
