Oils bright spot on dull Australian exchanges

Trading was quiet to dull on Australian stock exchanges yesterday, the main interest being provided by oil stocks, particularly those drilling on the north-west shelf. Selected industrials made rises, but mining issues moved only a few cents.

In Sydney WoodsideBurmah continued last week’s run with a 22c rise at 340 c —the highest price this year. The isue opened at 330 c but firmed through persistent buying pressure. In Melbourne it gained 14c to 330 c after sales at 340 c. Ampol Exploration came back from its high point of 180 c to close steady on 170 c in Melbourne and 173 c in Sydney while Santos, which is drilling in the Patchawarra central area of South Australia, was steady on 280 c. A.O.G.’s reported copper find in New South Wales came too late to affect the share price, steady on 29c. Beach eased slightly to 34c, but Flinders held firm on 13c. Bearer gained a cent at 20c in Sydney and Bridge and Endeavour made small gains.

Philip Morris, the tobacco issue, made the best industrial gain of the day with a 40c rise to 1550 c. The Bank of N.S.W. dropped 14c to 790 c in the poorly traded banking sector. The National Bank eased 12c to 370 c. B.H.P. eased 5c to 1245 c despite a sound start to the day. Earlier the stock had risen to 1260 c in Sydney but throughout the afternoon dropped steadily. Brewers were poorly traded, with Tooheys down 4c to 306 c and Swan down 2c to 233 c. C.S.R. rose 4c to 532 c and Dunlop rose 2c to 126 c.

In Melbourne mining moves generally were liimted to a few cents. Whim Creek slipped 20c on a selling quote of 240 c, but Consolidated Gold added 8t at 560 c and Metals Ex. gained 10c to 290 c. W.M.C. at 308 c, M.I.M. at 318 c, C.R.A. at 700 c and Great Boulder at 180 c firmed slightly, while Robe River, Poseidon and Utah were unchanged. SYDNEY Sales.—Amal.
