Miss M. Aoki, aged 19, set a new women’s world record for the 100-metres butterfly event at the national swimming championships in Tokyo. Her time, of Imin 3.9osec, broke the existing record of Imin 4.losec, set by Miss A. Jones, of the United States, in 1970.
Miss Aoki’s performance was the first swimming world record set in Japan for nine years. Her time over the first 50 metres was 30.2 sec.
