The United States and Rumania joined Australia in the Davis Cup inter-zone tennis semi-finals as Spain edged ahead of Czechoslovakia in the battle to reach the last four of the competition. The United States, defending the trophy for the fourth successive year, took a 3-0 winning lead over Chile in their American zone final in Santiago when S. R. Smith and E. van Dillen beat P. Cornejo and J. Fillol, 0-2, 6-4. 4-6, 3-6, 6-3. The Americans now face either Spain or Czechoslovakia.

Spain overcame an early setback in their European zone group B final against Czechoslovakia in Barcelona to emerge with a 2-1 lead. M. Orantes and J. Gisbert dropped the first set to J. Kodes and J. Kuka I before fighting back for a 10-12. 6-2, 7-5, 6-4 victory. I. Nastase and I. Tiriac (Rumania), who have reached the challenge round twice in the past three years, completed a 3-2 victory over the Soviet Union in Tbilisi in their European zone group A final.

Rumania now faces Australia for a place in the Davis Cup final. The Soviet Union, drew level when A. Metreveii beat Tiriac, 2-6, 6-4, 1-6, 6-4. 6-3. but Nastase took Rumania to victory when he beat T. Kakulia, 6-2, 6-2, 6-3, in the deciding match.
