INNOVATION AT SCHOOL
Disaster-relief team formed
A disaster-relief team, to work with the Civil Defence teams in states of emergency, is to be formed in Ashburton of senior pupils from Ashburton College.
The unit will be set up by the Red Cross, and the students will be voluntary workers for the association. They will be taught how to set up a field hospital, perform rescues from heights and in crevasses, and administer first aid. Two instructors from Christchurch are to hold training courses for four consecutive Saturdays, and the students will be expected to hold regular practices. So far, thirty senior school members have offered themselves for the team, but the instructors prefer to train only 10. Ashburton College will be the fourth school in the South Island to make up a disaster-relief team. Two of these have utility vehicles and trailers, but Ashburton College and Waitaki High School will be provided with trailers only.
