Escapers free for hour
Two prisoners who escaped from a work party at Paparua Prison yesterday had less than an hour of freedom. Ivan Raymond Painter and David John Niblett, both aged 20, were working near the main gate of the prison when they made off at 1.32 p.m. they ran across several paddocks until they reached the Old West Coast Road. From there they set off across more paddocks towards McLeans Island.
However, a farmer’s wife spotted the pair a few miles from the prison and the police were notified. The escapers offered no resistance. A police spokesman said that they had run three to five miles and were tired and very, very quiet. Painter had been gaoled for theft and burglary and Niblett for unlawful conversion of a motor-vehicle and driving while disqualified. Both will appear on charges of escaping from lawful custody.
