Snow-clearing problem

Four weeks and a half after it was blocked by snow, the Western Valley Road, between Little River and Port Levy, was reopened on Thursday. Because of close-set fences, the Mount Herbert County Council was told at its meeting yesterday, it was impossible for a machine to clear sections of the road. Cr D. J. Blakely said that, at its worst, there was 20ft of snow over one section of the road.

The chairman (Mr E. R. Radcliffe) said that the council, perhaps, should seek the right to lift fences where necessary.

The council decided to inspect the road to see if it would be possible to widen the worst lengths.
