Magnifique attracts attention

"The Press” Special Service PALMERSTON NORTH. Magntfique and Royal Quandary attracted attention at Awapuni yesterday morning when they were given their first test at speed since spells. They ran three furlongs In fine style. An Australian trip in the spring is planned for the pair. Several Manawatu Hunt Club candidates worked with Self Defence running the best time. Mess Time schooled well, while the Levin runners, Quondo and Ragham. also impressed. The course proper is very heavy at present, and is certain to remain so for the meeting on Saturday. Magntfique and Royal Quand-

ary worked on the inside trial grass where the going was best. They ran three furlongs in 39sec, and were never at top. Royal Andrew galloped three furlongs in 37 4-ssec and did well. He is coming to hand in pleasing style. The hack sprinter, Self Defence, made the best time when he ran half a mile in 52sec. He ran a good race at Wanganui, and has a chance in the Carnarvon Hack Handicap. The Devin runner, Twitchit, completed six furlongs in Imln 26sec. the final three in 41 4-5 sec. Mess Time jumped three of the steeplechase fences in fine style, and then ran an easy seven furlongs. He has thrived lately and looks a top chance in the McEwen Hack Steeplechase.

On the course proper, Ragham and Pisces took 56|sec for half a mile. Ragham looks in great order and will contest the Ryder Stakes at Levin. Pisces is an improver for the Bainesse Juvenile on Saturday. The Winter Cup Trial runner, Thun, worked over six furlongs in Imin 27sec. the last three in Bright Giri and Quondo kept together all the way over half a mile in 56sec. the last three furlongs in 42sec. Purdie took Imin 13sec for five furtongs, the last three in 43sec. My Opinion and Suda Bay gave a good display over six hurdles, and so did Meditate and Wyndham Mac, which make their jumping debuts on Saturday. Both show promise, especially Meditate, which finished in front yesterday.
