SHEARERS’ WAGES

Unanimous support for district shearers’ claims for $2O a 100 for machine shearing and $22 a hundred for blade shearing in the new season was given at a meeting held at Rangiora last week.

The meeting comprised shearing contractors, shearing run organisers, and shearers’ representatives from Mid-Canterbury and North Canterbury, and the national president of the New Zealand Workers’ Union (Mr J. W. Sylvester), and South Island officials of the union. A resolution from the meeting noted that these rates were within the 3 per cent general wage order and the two cost-of-living adjustments totalling 9.1 per cent granted since the last award was negotiated. Farmers will be asked for contract rates to enable the new rates to be paid.

A report of the meeting released by the New Zealand Workers’ Union said that the union was fully behind the workers’ claims.
