Family-benefit payout

Post Office tellers would co-operate with the Social Welfare Department tomorrow in the first family-benefit payout since the increases announced in the Budget, said the Chief Postmaster at Christchurch (Mr M. T. Reedy) yesterday.

Mr Reedy said that special arrangements had been made because thousands of supplementary familybenefit books could not be supplied. Post Office tellers would, therefore, pay double on the $6 and multiples of $6 values printed on the blue family-benefit orders. They would have to stamp the orders with the new doubled value, and ask the payee to initial the alteration.

Mr Reedy said that this would slow down paying operations if big demands were made for family benefits, particularly on the first day of payment. However, special staffing arrangements would be made at those offices which handled a large number of familybenefit payments. There might be delays in service to some Post Office customers, said Mr Reedy. He appealed for understanding and patience by the public if inconvenience was experienced.

Mr Reedy also said that tellers would continue to amend the blue printed orders for family benefits until the present blue order books were replaced about the middle of next year.
