Commonwealth Games cigarettes
Sir, —Mr Scott is doing a good job. The money has to come from somewhere so let him get on with it. People who want to smoke will do so anyway!—Yours, etc., NON SMOKER. July 12, 1972. Sir, —Surely “Realist” is being just the slightest bit unrealistic? Has he ever heard about the international cigarette-producing company which runs a foundation solely for sports on the profits from its sales of the deadly weed? I don’t remember having heard anyone complain about that situation. Nobody is forcing anybody else to smoke this particular brand—and, unlike your other correspondent, I cannot imagine that one person will be smoking his or her way through the entire four million packets! It seems that there will always be someone somewhere to squash someone else’s decent gesture. I, for one, will most certainly buy at least one pack of these cigarettes a week and feel that in a small way I have made another small contribution to a Commonwealth effort. As a postscript may I add that they’re rather nice anyway, so I just may have to buy more than one packet per week.—Yours, etc., STATUE COFFIN. July 12, 1972.
