Waiting lists for hospitals

Sir, —If a person in need of surgery is willing to pay the necessary expenses of surgeon and private hospitals and feels that the outlay is worth the end-result of being well sooner, I see no reason whatever why he should not go ahead and spend his money in this way, rather than join the queues for a public hospital bed. Surely it is a personal decision and not a question of principle in forcing the Government to provide an improved service. It is unpleasant enough to undergo surgery and the subsequent recovery period but for some people to have a hospital and doctor of their own choice can make it a bit more bearable. As for belonging to private insurance schemes, this is a very prudent way of ensuring that the bills don’t slow down your rate of recovery through worrying about them afterwards—Yours, etc., A. L.
