Unlighted cycles
Sir, —In motoring just one and a half miles yesterday morning in dark, wet conditions, I passed three cyclists without lights of any description. Withells Road is both narrow and busy, and it must be sheer luck that these cyclists do not get hit. Even if they do not mind becom-i ing accident statistics, would they please spare a thought for the motorist? May I ask the chief traffic officer how many cyclists are apprehended on a monthly average for this offence, and what guarantee have the Transport Department that lights will be purchased for their cycles? —Yours, etc.,
ANXIOUS MOTORIST,
July 5. 1972. [Mr A. Laing, chief traffic officer, Waimairi traffic district, Ministry of Transport, 1 replies: “We wholeheartedly
support the correspondent’s plea for all cyclists to make sure their machines have front and rear lights operating during the hours of darkness. During the last few weeks we have stepped up enforcement of the laws covering all lighting offences and a monthly average of offences dealt with in the Waimairi traffic district would be about 60. We can give no guarantee that offenders will purchase lights for their cycles but the number apprehended for a second offence would appear to be low.”]
