SUMMIT ROUTE
Criticism has been levelled at the Mount Herbert. Akaroa and Wairewa county councils for using a bulldozer rather than a surveyor to determine the suitability of a proposed route for the Hilltop to Port Levy road. Ecology Action (Christchurch), which has written to the councils, opposing the work, said in the letter that “if the combined councils continue with this provocative action. Ecology Action (Christchurch) will 'move to stop them by any effective means.’’ No elaboration was made on what the “effective means” might entail. In a prepared statement yesterday the ecology group said that their move was in response to a report that the combined councils had bulldozed a track from the Port Levy saddle to the Hilltop, damaging some bush on the way, as part of a feasibility study for the road. “Some members felt very strongly about this, and it was decided that any action would be considered to stop the bulldozer until after the feasibility study had been completed by a surveying team and objections had been heard,” the statement said.
