Te Kanawa in ‘Carmen'
Kiri Te Kanawa is to sing the role of Micaela in a new production of "I armen" at Covent Garden, the Royal Opera has announced in London. She will also repeat her successful role of the Countess in “The Marriage "I Figaro.”
Miss Te Kanawa is at present touring New Zealand for the N.Z.8.C.. and will sing in Christchurch in a subscription concert on July 15.
The popular New Zealand soprano was one of 122 celebrated singers named to take leading roles in 25 opera productions at Covent Garden in the season beginning on September 1.
Another New Zealander. Heather Begg, will sing the part of Marcellina in "The Marriage of Figaro," and will have several minor roles; and Donald Mclntyre has three major roles — Shaklovity in “Khovanshchina." Amfortas in "Parsifal.” and Pizarro in "Fidelio.”
The New Zealand - born conductor, John Matheson, will conduct at least four operas in the New Year season at Covent Garden. They will be “Cavelleria Rusticana.” “Pagliacci.” “Parsifal,” and some performances of “Aida." Mr Matheson is also touring New Zealand for the N.Z.B.C. this winter. He will conduct the N.Z.B.C. Symphony Orchestra in three concerts in Christchurch this month—subscription concerts on July 13 and 15, and a lunch-time concert on July 14.
