Victory for Newcombe

(N.Z P A -Reuter—Copyright) ST LOUIS. J D. Newcombe, of Australia, beat N. Pilic (Jugoslavia). 6-3, 6-3, to win the $50,000 Holton tennis tournament, the first leg of the American professional tennis tour. Newcombe won with strong serves and at one point won 20 out of 23 straight deliveries. Pilic had advanced to the final with a 4-6, 7-6, 7-6 win over C. Drysdale, of South Africa, on Saturday, and Newcombe had defeated C. Pasarell (Puerto Rico), 6-3, 7-5. Newcombe received $lO,OOO for winning the tournament. The next match on the professional circuit will be in Washington, D.C., on July 17. In an all-Australia final in the double, Newcombe and A. Roche beat J. Alexander and P. Dent. 7-6, 6-2.
