Objections to closing street
Several objections to the proposed closing of Lowe Street, at the intersection of Blenheim Road and Foster Street, were heard by a committee of the Riccarton Borough Council last evening. A number of written objections included a letter with 30 signatures protesting that closing access to Lowe Street from Blenheim Road would mean shifting a nearby bus stop. About 10 residents and businessmen attended the hearing. After extensive inquiries by traffic engineers and a survey by the Christchurch Regional Planning Authority, the council had decided to close access to the street at Blenheim Road. The committee chairman (Mr R. S. Lester) said he was pleased with the attendance at the hearing; the council was keen to hear as many views on the subject as was possible. Mr P. F. Tempero made submissions on behalf of several industrial firms whose trade would be affected. He suggested that a possible alternative would be to close off Foster Street.
