ADVERTISING CIGARETTES

Warning in Australia (N.Z.P.A. Staff Correspondent) SYDNEY, July 2.

Strict controls over the health warning that will have to accompany cigarette advertising on Australian radio and television later this year have been announced by the Minister of Heath (Sir Kenneth Anderson). The warning to be spoken on radio, and shown and spoken on television, is: “The National Medical and Research Council warns that cigarette smoking is dangerous to health.”

The warning will be spoken clearly over a minimum period of five seconds at the sound level normally used for spoken announcements. It must be read without any extraneous sound, and, in the words of the PostmasterGeneral (Sir Alan Hulme), “avoiding any element of ridicule, irony, or humour.”
