Obituary Mr R. M. Firth

A former consul-general and travel commissioner for (New Zealand in San Francisco, Mr Robert M. Firth, died last night in Wellington, aged 72. Born in Christchurch, Mr Firth was educated at Southland Boys’ High School, Wanganui Technical College, and Auckland University. He was a keen Rugby player, and played widely in New Zealand and Australia.
Promoted to manager of the Greymouth branch of the Tourist and Publicity Department in 1925, he was the tourist officer in Melbourne in 1928, Government representative from 1930, and a trade commissioner in Los Angeles from 1935. He was the New Zealand trade commissioner in Toronto from 1938, New Zealand Commissioner-General for the New York World Fair in 1939, and director of the New Zealand supply mission in Washington from 1940 to 1942, when he became official secretary at Ottawa and then Acting High Commissioner in Canada from 1943 to 1944. He then became Assistant General Manager of the Tourist Department until 1950 when he was appointed to San Francisco. He retired in 1960.
