Lamb sales up in U.S.
New Zealand lamb sales in the United States so far this year are about 20 per cent higher than at this time in 1971, and prices are appreciably better, according to the chairman of the Meat Board (Mr C. Hilgendorf).
In Canada, Mr Hilgendorf: said, sales this year are almost three times greater than last year. Mr Hilgendorf returned to. Christchurch vesterday from the United States after attending, with the board’s deputy chairman (Mr B. Ryan) and" its North American di-' rector (Mr H. C. M. Douglas),; a meeting at Monterey, California, of the Lamb Promo-; tion Co-ordination Commit-: tee, comprising representa-I tives of American, Australian, and New Zealand sheep producers. New Zealand continued to hold the confidence of the American sheep producers. Mr Hilgendorf said, partly because it was possible to give them much more pre-' Actable information about ■
isales in North America. This; enabled the Americans to! market more profitably, and also helped New Zealand to ;do likewise, as there was nothing to gain in undercutting their market. The latter also tended to reduce prices for the New Zealand product ■ at the same time. ' The meetings between the of the three 'Countries also made it possible to iron out minor disagreements more quickly and efficiently than if no such organisation existed, said Mr! ! Hilgendorf. , Another advantage of the; /committee was that it had; been able to show the Aus-! tralians that more control of the quality of the product; , was to the’ benefit of all three J countries.
