Difficult decision
At 2 a.m. today, no decision had been reached by a Labour Party selection committee on candidates for Avon, Papanui, Rangiora and Riccarton.
Eighteen nominees spoke to the meeting of about 100 and the committee retired at 11.40 p.m. At 1 a.m. a brief announcement was made that the nominees were donw to a short UsL
The major interest was in the Avon seat. Selection there is virtually election to Parliament because it is a Labour stronghold and Mr J. Mathison is retiring on reaching the party’s age limit after holding the seat since 1947. One of the candidates said he was interested only in Avon. AU the others were available for any of the electorates but one man said he would prefer to be selected for Rangiora. AU the sitting members were confirmed for their electorates as follows:— Sydenham, Mr N. E. Kirk, Leader of the Opposition; Wigram, Mr M. A. Connelly; Lyttelton, Mr T. M. McGuigan; St Albans, Mr R. P. B. Drayton; Christchurch Central, Mr B. G. Barclay.
