Factory strike over lay-off

(N.Z. Press Association) MKMLMiTh April 27. The prospect of men being laid off by Mason Bros. Engineering, Ltd, Auckland, has resulted in a strike by 120 tradesmen. About 25 boilemakers, welders and labourers are to be laid off a result of a drop in heavy contract work. Some clerical workers and storemen’s jobs are also in jeopardy. Redundancy payments are provided for in the relevant awards, and the company offered improved payments. There was no agreement. The men have refused to hand negotiations over to officials of the combined unions.
