Journalists stop work

(N.Z. Press Association) PALMERSTON NORTH, April 18. Members of the Manawatu branch of the Wellington Journalists’ Union stopped work at 10 a.m. today, and will meet tomorrow morning to decide when they will return to work. The stoppage is a protest against the offer by the Newspaper Publishers’ Association of a 2 per cent increase in wages, made earlier this month at award negotiations in Wellington. The journalists ha<j claimed an increase of 40 to 45 per cent to restore lost relativity. New Plymouth journalists also attended a stop-work meeting today. The meeting began at 11 a.m. and did not end until after 3 p.m. In Timaru, a stop-work meeting of 22 journalists passed a motion giving unqualified support to their assessors. A similar motion was passed at a stop-work meeting of journalists in Invercargill tonight. The meeting lasted two hours and a quarter.
