GREEK GETS REPRIEVE

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) ■ ATHENS, April 16. A Greek professor serving 18 years in prison has had his sentence suspended for eight months because he might have lost his eyesight if he stayed in prison. George Maghakis, aged 50, a former professor of penal law at Athens University, was imprisoned in April, 1970, for subversive activities against the Army-backed regime. He was a member of the underground organisation "Democratic Defence.” He applied to an Athens civil court seeking his release under a provision of Greek penal law which says that prisoners may have their sentences suspended for various periods if their detention is detrimental to their health.
