5044 die in earthquake (N Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) TEHERAN, April 16. The latest statistics from the earthquake in South Iran on Monday put casualties at 5044 dead, 1336 seriously injured and 3714 homes totally ruined. As the Shah and Empress Farah, accompanied by the Prime Minister (Mr Hoveida) landed at the devastated village of Qeer, the Army’s assistant commander (General Youseff) reported that of 5044 believed dead, 3072 bodies had been recovered. General Yousefi also said that of 109 villages hit by the quake, 58 had been totally destroyed. Previous estimates given for the disaster were 4000 dead.
