Fleming’s Mill

Sir,—The city should buy Fleming’s mill; it will be a source of eternal regret if the opportunity is allowed to pass. The bigger Christchurch grows the greater will be the need for recreational land. It is obvious that much of the

area within a mile radius of Hagley Park will increasingly be used for high-density accommodation. The park wi|l increasingly be needed by the additional potential occupants. The sort of area of beauty which could be developed is particularly and peculiarly in accord with the spirit of the citizens and of the city. If the whole area cannot be bought, then a condition of its development should be the dedication of walk-ways on each side of the river "for public access from Deans Avenue to Mona Vale. That there is no one body Which can speak and act for the whole of Christchurch is a strong reason for amalgamation of councils when a matter like this is under consideration.—Yours, etc., ALISTAIR BEECHEY.
