Local government reform
Sir,—ln today’s issue tt is stated that the Christchurch City Council would not want to include all of Mount Herbert County in . Greater Christchurch, but would be willing to take in Governor's Bay and Allandale, leaving the “more rural” area out as it would be too costly to service. What of the week-ends, when the city-dwellers use our area as a playground, endangering the roads, and cluttering up the beaches? Is it fair that a small and poor county should bear the brunt and be expected to provide toilet facilities, fire protection, etc.? The far-sighted Local Government Commission could see the need for the harbour beaches to be included in the city. Perhaps Mount Herbert County could have parking meters at the beaches to pay for these facilities.—Yours, etc., LOCAL RESIDENT. March 21, 1972.
