Volleyball first
A national first will be created when a men’s volleyball team represents New Zealand for the first time at the Australian state championships in Sydney on March 29 and 30.
A women’s team competed for the first time last year and was fourth.
After the championships on April 3, the teams will play tests against Australia, and prior to the championships, warm-up games will be played in Melbourne and Canberra.
During the past week the teams have been in Wellington training before they leave for Sydney on Tuesday. Mr C. Benacek, a Czechoslovakian basketball representative at the Londbn Olympics in 1948 and who has been developing volleyball in New Zealand since he came to this country in 1950, will manage the teams.
Mr R. Leek is the assistantmanager, and the team captains are M. Chambers (Auckland—-men) and M. Horlor (Canterbury—women).
D. Jones and A. McNicol will attend the international referees’ course to be held prior to the state championships.
