‘Dial-a-sailor’ succeeds

The “dial-a-sailor” programme has been successful. An officer aboard the icebreaker Northwind at Lyttelton said yesterday that the ship’s crew had been overwhelmed by offers of hospitality.

Yesterday morning many calls were made with invitations to parties, barbecues, race meetings and camping. At lunch-time yesterday, the crew were hosts to 50 children from Christchurch. Accompanied by teachers and parents, the children were shown over the ship and treated to cookies and ice cream.

A similar function will be held aboard the Northwind at 10.30 ajn. on Saturday when 50 children from children’s homes will be entertained.

At 1030 ajn. on Sunday, 30 sea rangers and 40 sea cadets will be shown over the icebreaker which will sail for Hobart at 9 am. on Monday.
