15ft shark in net
A big hammerhead shark, measuring 15ft, was caught in 100 fathoms of water about 22 miles south-east of Point Gibson last Monday in the net of the Lyttelton trawler Theseus.
The shark, said Mr D. J. Threadwell, owner and master of the Theseus, was taken while stem trawling before daylight. It was the largest shark he had seen, and the first hammerhead he had caught. Hammerheads are more common in New Zealand’s north and in Australia, and are considered dangerous. The shark made rather a mess of Mr Threadwell’s net but gradually quietened down. Mr Threadwell said that his son cut the shark up and threw the remains in the sea.
Mr Threadwell, one of Lyttelton’s most experienced fishermen has been fishing out of Lyttelton for 22 years.
