More than $1m for C.O.R.S.O. in 1971
Funds raised by C.0.R.5.0j in Canterbury and Westland in 1971 amounted to $202,854, exactly twice as much as in the previous year, the branch’s area organiser (Mr R. A. Consedine) said on Tuesday.
"This is the largest amount sent into C.0.R.5.0. from this area.” Mr Conse’dine said. “The appeal for ; funds to help Pakistan refugees in India would have ! pushed the figure up.” Of the sum received. ■524,729 had been raised for! j C.0.R.5.0. and its work! joverseas by young people in 'Canterbury and Westland, Mr Consedine said. The New Zealand total of I money contributed to ■ C.0.R.5.0. in 1971 was $1,159,522—the first time that more than slm had been sent from New Zealand. “Among its various projects for 1972, C.0.R.5.0. has assigned $250,000 for relief work and rehabilitation among refugees in Bangladesh,” Mr Consedine said. Grants in 1972 will be! made to finance South Pacific laid ($45,000); thei U.N.E.S.C.O. gift coupon' scheme ($3000); the United Nations High Commission for Refugees ($15,000); the World Council of Churches ($10,000); and U.N.I.C.E.F. ($75,000). A total of $32,334 has been allocated to the continuation of projects in the South Pacific; $lO9O will be spent in New Guinea; $4OOO in Indonesia; $7OOO jin Thailand; $7500 in .Ceylon; $2400 in Pakistan; $41,940 in India; $lB,BlO in Korea; $21,200 in the Middle
East; $31,000 in Africa; $l5OO in Ethiopia; $8530 in the Philippines; $2OOO in Laos; and $2OOO in Greece. Special funds, amounting to $77,000), have been set aside for nursing and educational scholarship funds, for .the U.N.IJC.E.F. supplemenjtary feeding programme, and for emergency reserve; and $67,949 for the milk powder and whoiernilk biscuit programme for 1972.
