AUCKLAND, Feb. 23.
Students who become pregnant while at teachers’ training colleges in the Auckland area will, under most circumstances, be given leave Without pay for up to 12
This was announced today by the chairman of the Auckland Teachers’ College council (Dr W. J. D. Minogue), who said arrangements had been made with the cooperation of the teachers* colleges and the Department of Education.
“They take into account the circumstances in the individual case, the effect of the pregnancy on the student’s course, the possibility of the course being completed in the future, and many other factors,” Dr Minogue said. "Where the circumstances justify completion of the course, the most common arrangement is for the council to recommend to the Department of Education that the student be given leave without pay fora period of up to 12 months,* 1 he said. Dr Minogue said that towards the end of the period of leave, the student might reapply for admission, which might be granted so that she normally resumed the course at the point reached when she was granted leave. "Readmission to complete the course is usually approved if supported by the principal
of the college, and the district senior inspector,” Dr Minogue said.
