ADDINGTON MARKET Firm sale for good breeding ewes

Good, representative lines of adult breeding ewes met a free inquiry at the Addington market yesterday, but the plainer, one*year ewes, and many of the two-tooths were easier.

A feature of the sale) was the sustained inquiry for Romneys. The best of the annual draft lines from Banks Peninsula reached $5.75, while the pick of the Romney two - tooths made $9. Yesterday’s store sheep yarding declined from 29,010 last week to 24,650 and consisted of 4730 wether lambs, 665 ewe lambs, 8530 twotooth ewes, and 10,725 adult ewes.

Store lambs

The recent improvement in the wool and pelt market was reflected in the store lamb sale, where all classes met a very Arm inquiry. Flne-wooiled wether lambs made up the bulk of the entry, and while quality was mainly only average, the sale was a free one throughout. Wellgrown lambs in forward order frequently bettered *4. The best of the halfbred and Corriedale wether lambs sold from $3.80 to $4.35, with some sales to s4.7o;.average from $3.40 to $3.70, and small down to $2.80. It was a very small lamb which fetched less than $3.

A small selection of Romney wether lambs sold particularly well, the best of the entry reaching $4.50. Most of the other sales ranged from $3.70 to $4. Several pens of shorn lambs were Included in the yarding, but most of them were in very light condition. Shorn lambs in good, forward condition sold to $3.65, and the remainder mainly from $2.40 to $3.

In spite of the very small entry, ewe lambs had a slow, hard sale. Values for most of the entry were in line with wether lambs rates. Average flnewoolled ewe lambs sold from $3.50 to $4.30 and small from $1.90 to $2.70. Some shorn Border cross ewe lambs ranged from $4.45 to $5.30, and woolly

ewe lambs of similar breeding; at $4-70. Sales of store lambs included: Wethers.—J. R. Hodgen (Hawarden), 621 Corriedales at $3.40 to $4 40; F. W. Thrower (Teddingtoni, 108 Romneys at $4 05 to $4 50; Lands and Survey Department (Aharua), 460 shorn Romneys at $2.45 to $3.60; F. Mugford Unveil), 30 Romneys at $5; 30 Down cross at $5; S. C. and R. J Trolove (Kaikoura), 120 Corriedales at $4.05 to $4.30.

Two-tooth ewes

Apart from a small selection Of the best lines, fine-woolled two-tooth ewes had an easier sale. Romneys, however, had a brisk inquiry at values fully firm on recent rates.

This week’s yarding was the largest of the season. It consisted of five full races, and an over-flow in the fat iamb pens. Although quality was not as good as at last week’s sale, the trend of values for fine-woolled ewes was in line with the trend at recent ewe fairs.

Where there were regular sales at $7 or more last week, only a small selection changed hands at $7 or more yesterday. Compared with the rates at last sale, halfbred and Corriedale two-tooths were generally 40c easier, and in line with rates ruling a fortnight ago. A small selection of the best fine-woolled two-tooths sold from $7.30 to $B. with one sale at $8.30; medium to good average, 15.80 to $6.80, and smaller from $5 to $5.60. The yarding Included a useful selection of Romneys, but the supply fell far short of the demand. In all respects, they met an excellent sale. Any sheep showing size sold every bit as well as Romneys at last week’s Tinwald two-tooth fair.

The best of the yarding reached $9, with average from $7 .50 to $B, and smaller from $6 to $7.

Sales of twotooth ewes included: — S. M. Johns (Kaikoura', 211 Romneys at $7.40 to $9: K. C. and P. R. Ensor Hlanmer Springs), 175 Romneys at $6.20 to $6.50; David J. Parsons (Ward), 651 Halfbreds at $7.10

Adult tiLerp

Adult ewes agaii had a verv satisfactory sale. Some of the one-yea r ewes were back 30c on last sale, but the well-mouthed representative line) were fullw firm on last week’s rates. Where Romneys were offered, values reached their best level, of the season.

While the yarding was not a large one for a February sale. It included a useful selection of ewes with two .yews' breeding life remaining. The demand for Romneys was a feature of the sale, the best of the annual draft lines fetching more than $5. Some early-shorn four-vear-old Corriedale ewes topped the adult ewe sale at $6.90 and there were other sales of well-mouthed ewes at $5.50 to -'16.30.
