Admiral’s last call

The commander of the United States Antarctic support force (RearAdmiral L. B. McCuddin), above, yesterday left Christchurch for McMurdo Station on what will'be his last visit to the Antarctic this summer. He will return today.

McMurdo Station is expected to be closed for summer activities on Sunday; the last Hercules is then scheduled to come out. This week United States Navy Hercules have been bringing out 80 to 90 men a day in order to reduce the total of McMurdo Station to the 200 or so who will spend the winter there.

The departure from McMurdo of the last Hercules on Sunday will not quite mark the start of physical isolation for men the station; two days later the National Science Foundation research ship Eltanin is due to make a visit there.
