New-look soccer event
The Rangers preseason soccer tournament will again be held next month, but this year with, two major differences. Instead of being played under flood-lights on Thursday evenings, the games will be on Sunday afternoons.
The six northern area clubs in the Southern League first division will be competing — Christchurch City, Western, Rangers. Timaru City. Shamrock and Technical. The National League sides, Christchurch United and New Brighton, are not included.
Play will be in two sections, the first comprising Western, City and Technical, and the second. Rangers, Shamrock and Timaru. The finals will be on March 26, when the section winners meet to decide the championship and the runners-up play for third place.
The prize-money is $6O for first, $3O for second, and $lO for third. There will be an incentive for teams to score as many goals as possible. Should clubs have an equal number of points at the end of section play, placings will be decided on the number of goals they have scored. If these are also equal, section winners will be decided by toss of the coin. No player will be permitted to play for more than one club during the tournament.
The sectional draw is:— March 5: City v. Western, 1 p.m.; Rangers v. Shamrock, 2.30 p.m. March 12: Shamrock v.
Timaru, 1 p.m.; City v. Technical, 2.30 p.m. March 19: Western v. Technical, 1 pm.; Rangers v. Timaru, 2.30 p.m.
