START OF TOUR

First match drawn (N.Z.PA.-Reuter—Copyright) JOHANNESBURG. The New Zealand women’s cricket team drew the first match of its South African tour, against Transvaal yesterday. But its left-arm seam bowler, J. Saulbrey, returned from medical treatment for an injured achilles tendon and nearly bowled her team to victory. After dismissing Transvaal for 131 in reply to their innings total of 225 for eight declared, the Kiwis scored a quick 107 for three declared, leaving Transvaal a target of 221 in 140 minutes for victory. An aggressive 78 by M. Katz, who hit 12 fours in a 93 minute innings, put Transvaal in a souna position until Miss Saulbrey returned to the field to snap up three wickets in five overs. She did not bowl in her normal style because of her leg trouble and instead sent down slow left-arm spinners. At stumps, Transvaal had got to 162 but had lost seven wickets.

Scores: New Zealand 225/8 declared and 107/3 declared (E. Rouse 43, J. Doull 41 not out), Transvaal 131 (P. Carrick 5/35) and 162/7 (Katz 78; Saulbrey 3/32).
