BURGESS TREBLE

(Special Crspdt. N.Z.P.A.) KINGSTON.

M. G. Burgess, the Auckland batsman, completed an unusual treble when he scored his match-saving 101 in New Zealand’s second innings of the drawn first test against West Indies. Stretching back to late 1969, this was Burgess’s third consecutive test century. The first was his 119 against Pakistan in 1969. Then, in his next test, he scored 106 against England at Eden Park last year. He missed the first international of that series. Burgess and G. M. Turner are also figuring in an interesting race to their 1000 runs in tests. Burgess has 968 from 16 matches, and Turner 954 from 12.
