New pairs champions

Mrs A. Whiting (Woolston W.M.C.) yesterday won the Christchurch women’s bowling champion-of-champions pairs title when she beat last year’s winner, Mrs E. Hirst (New Brighton), 21-9, in the final.

There were some tight heads but Mrs Whiting, assisted greatly by the fine play of her lead, Mrs M. Beale, was more consistent than her opponent. Earlier results were:

Quarter-finals: Mrs Whiting beat Mrs J. Caldwell (Mona Vale), 27-14; Mrs C. Beer (Oxford) beat Mrs E. Steel (Shirley), 25-5; Mrs D. Lamb (Beckenham) beat Mrs R. Grove (Cashmere), 20-16. Semi-finals: Mrs Whiting beat Mrs Beer, 21-18; Mrs Hirst beat Mrs Lamb, 28-20.

Boxing.—Mr Frank Pearcy, a life member of the Auckland Boxing Association and a prominent referee for many years, died yesterday. He was the New Zealand amateur fly-weight champion in 1929.
