Uncertainty on charges

Although the Lyttelton Borough Council has advertised in today’s issue of “The Press” that it intends to increase retail power charges from May 1, it is not yet clear whether this will be possible. “The council adopted the charges on February 14, just an hour after the Prime Minister (Mr Marshall) announced the Government’s stabilisation measures,” said the Town Clerk (Mr R. A. Reid). “At this stage, it is not clear whether or net the council can adopt the new charges from May 1, and we will not be able to confirm the proposed increases until the situation has been clarified. “In the meantime, the council has had to advertise the revised charges to enable them to come into effect from May 1 if the New Zealand Electricity Department’s increased bulk power charge is applied after March 31.”
