COUNCIL ORDERS SIGNS REMOVED
On orders from the Riccarton Borough Council, advertising signs have been removed from the frontage of the proposed Park Royale hotel site on Deans Avenue,
The building firm of H. P. Holt, Ltd, has applied to the council for town-planning permission to use the land for a 190-bed hotel, and although town-planning approval has not been obtained, two large signs indicated that this would be the site of the hotel,
and the public were asked to subscribe to Pacific Syndicates, Ltd. “The council does not mind a sign being erected to say that such and such a building will be erected on a site, but it objects to a sign being used for advertising in the sense that the Deans Avenue signs were used,” said the Town Clerk of Riccarton (Mr T. N. Neate).
“No permit has been given to those concerned to advertise for finance, and, accordingly, the council ordered the removal of the signs. People round there complained.” Mr Neate said that the sign was also misleading, in that there was no guarantee that the council would allow the site to be used for a hotel. Objections to the application would close on February 28, he added.
