PRINTING STAFFS
A reference to dismissals within the clothing and printing industries in Christchurch, made on Saturday by the industrial reporter of “The Press,” was disputed yesterday as far as the printing industry is concerned.
Mr E. C. Andrews, vicepresident of the Canterbury Master Printers’ Association, said his executive knew of no cases of redundancy dismissals by members of the association. A number of Christchurch printing firms were at present seeking staff, said Mr Andrews. Another member of the executive, Mr L. Fulford, said that the general level of staffing in the industry was about the same as six months ago.
Our industrial reporter commented that he had said redundancy dismissals in Christchurch had been relatively few, and the only examples he had cited had been the rubber, clothing and printing industries. His report had been premature in the last respect, as although about 16 members cf the Canterbury Printers’ Union had been given notice of dismissal for redundancy they would not finish up till next month.
